There is something about the nights of New York City - the restlessness, the insomnia, the characters - that seem so quintessential to this city. It's an enigmatic qualirty that is all at once poetic, beautiful and romantic, and gives a sense of deep spiritual meaning and unity to otherwise seemingly prosaic and fragmented moments of life. The partiers, the couples strolling hand-in-hand, the person walking alone in the rain, the garbage man working the midnight shift - all of these human experiences take on a profound, if not sacred meaning once the noise and the chaos of the city have dimmed to a much softer glow. These portraits are of the people I've encounterd on the streets of my Brooklyn neighborhood who, lit solely by the lights of the city night, are strangers more alike in their collective human experiences than in their differences.
